Anti-Trolling Site Will Help Victims of Abuse
The UK government has created an anti-trolling service that instructs the victims of online abuse on how to report the problem and where to seek help.
The Stop Online Abuse site is focused on women and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people, who have suffered the most extreme online abuse since the appearance of the social media. The website explains how to identify abuse and get the offensive content removed.
The website in question offers help to people who suffer from harassment, revenge porn, hate speech and blackmail on the Internet, providing the victims with legal advice and practical tips on how to treat such comments. The site covers various forms of online abuse, from trolling to doxxing and cyberstalking.
The service sets out the line between free speech and abuse and explains that someone’s right to expression is limited with another person’s right not to be abused. One of the site’s sections is devoted to tackling online sexism, mostly in regard to women, where online abuse is the frequent use of threats of sexual violence and derogatory comments about their appearance and bodies.
The Stop Online Abuse website was created by the UK government following the research of online abuse experienced by women and LGBT people: for example, 23% of LGBT pupils experienced cyberbullying, while 5% of LGBT adults had been the target of online homophobic abuse or behavior.
Caroline Criado-Perez received death threats online after her campaign to get the face of a woman on a bank note. The campaigner welcomed the initiative, recognizing that there had been huge improvements in reporting abuse on some online services after she raised awareness of the problem. The writer added that at the time she didn’t know it was a police matter, or how to report it to the police.
Nicky Morgan, the minister for women and equalities, also appreciated the website, saying that it would provide practical advice for people on how to recognize abuse and what steps to take to get offensive content removed. Finally, Nik Noone, the representative of the LGBT anti-hate crime charity, revealed that over 1 million people in the United Kingdom annually face online abuse. The charity evidences an increasing trend, the impact of which can have far-reaching consequences. This is why the new website may ensure protection from harassment and abuse against women and LGBT people in the online world.

UK Songwriters Criticized Google and SoundCloud
The UK Academy of Songwriters, Composers and Authors criticized Google and SoundCloud – by clear reference, if not by name. In his speech, the head of the body focused on the licensing arguments around streaming music, putting particular emphasis on companies that he believes are not respecting songwriters.
According to his words, while streaming is becoming the dominant way of listening to music, it has yet to prove that it can provide a viable income for songwriters, because “some companies exploit safe harbor provision” to avoid paying fair value for music. The speech was addressed directly to tech firms whose search engines provide links to software enabling Internet users to steal songs from a service that is only licensed to stream. Apparently, this reference was aimed squarely at Google and software that allows to rip audio from its YouTube video service.
Other references were clearly made to SoundCloud – for instance, the words that songwriters get paid only if it monetizes their works. Indeed, SoundCloud has historically not paid royalties, but last year it launched the initiative to sell adverts and share the revenues with musicians. Since then, the service has paid out over $2m in royalties and continues negotiations with music labels.
Criticism of the music body came shortly after Sony Music decided to remove its catalogue from SoundCloud due to a “lack of monetization opportunities”. Today, the issue of the money earned by music creators from streaming is a hot topic, closely related to the discussions around how much performers make from YouTube or Spotify.
At the same time, songwriters and music publishers also express discontent with the fact that record labels get a much bigger share of the royalties paid out by streaming services.

User Data Exposed by Dating Site Hackers
Hackers made available personal data of around 4 million users of a major dating website. Media reports say that details of users’ sexual preferences were leaked, including data on whether people are gay or straight or seeking extramarital affairs, as well as their email addresses, usernames and dates of birth.
It is reported that hackers published information relating to users of Adult FriendFinder on the dark web – this is a part of the worldwide web that Google doesn’t index. After posting data, the intruders to the system claimed on the forum that they wanted to hit victims with spam emails.
The website in question accounts for 63 million users all over the world. The Adult FriendFinder introduces itself as a “thriving sex community”, where users can share sensitive sexual data. In result of the hack, the data of 3.9m users has been leaked, including those people who requested the service to delete their accounts and all relevant information.
One of the affected users confirmed that he has been targeted with virus-infected emails after his data leaked, even though he didn’t even use the site. He did try to get in and had to provide his data to do so, because a user couldn’t get into the Adult FriendFinder without handing over information. He then deleted his account and believed that the data was erased, but dating websites are not always as secure as they meant to be.
The industry experts think that after the spam email campaign, the hackers will also use the obtained information to find blackmail targets, as they have names, dates of birth and addresses – everything to target specific individuals.
The Adult FriendFinder explained that it is investigating the leak and cooperating with law enforcement. The company informed that a comprehensive investigation with the help of 3rd-party forensics experts had already been started.

Researchers have designed an imaging chip that could turn mobile phones into devices that can see through the wall, wood, plastic, paper and other object. The team of researchers has found a way to make the terahertz band of theelectromagnetic spectrum — the spectrum band between microwaves and infrared light — usable for medical or consumer devices. As infrared light can be viewed by some night vision goggles, devices that can image the terahertz band could see through drywall, wood, even human skin. This band has been used before, but the new solution is cheaper and simpler to create. The research team linked two scientific advancements. One involves tapping into an unused range in the electromagnetic spectrum. The other is a new microchip technology. The electromagnetic spectrum characterizes wavelengths of energy. Radio waves or microwaves are used for cell phones or the infrared wavelength that makes night vision devices possible. By using the terahertz band of the electromagnetic spectrum, images can be created with signals operating in the terahertz (THz) range without using several lenses inside a device. Chips are manufactured using Complementary Metal-Oxide Semiconductor (CMOS) technology.

“CMOS is affordable and can be used to make lots of chips,” Dr. Kenneth O, professor of electrical engineering at UT Dallas and director of the Texas Analog Center of Excellence(TxACE). said. “The combination of CMOS and terahertz means you could put this chip and receiver on the back of a cellphone, turning it into a device carried in your pocket that can see through objects. We’ve created approaches that open a previously untapped portion of the electromagnetic spectrum for consumer use and life-saving medical applications. The terahertz range is full of unlimited potential that could benefit us all.”
Now, the team is trying to create a fully operational imaging system. However, due to privacy concerns, Dr. O and his team is focused on uses in the distance range of less than four inches. Researchers are hoping that consumers and businesses would use the imaging system to find studs, check money for signs of counterfeiting, or check for health problems like tumors
